Meet Alex
Meet Alex! This vocal guy is packed with personality and he is sure to entertain you with his antics. Alex knows many words and phrases and will happily show off his big vocabulary. Typical of a cockatoo, he can also get quite loud and will screech if he is displeased with something.
Alex came to us with some scruffy feathers, likely due to a vitamin deficiency, but he has been very good about eating a variety of foods here in shelter and as he molts out his old feathers, his new ones should come in looking much more healthy. We have, thankfully, not observed any plucking behaviors from him. His new home will need to continue on with his healthy diet to ensure he looks and feels his best. He is currently eating Harrison’s pellets, as well as a variety of fresh foods, with seeds being just a treat, as recommended by the vet.
Alex is also a very busy boy who needs lots of enrichment. Toys, puzzles, things to destroy – cockatoos are intelligent animals that are hardwired to always be foraging for food, so it is important to keep them busy.
Alex came to us as an owner surrender and his age is an approximation, but he is believed to be 20-25 years old. Cockatoos can live upwards of 60+ years so his new family needs to be prepared for that commitment.
*Although the BC SPCA opposes the keeping of exotic animals as pets because it is challenging, if not impossible, to provide them with everything they need to thrive, Alex found his way into the care of the BC SPCA and is now looking for an experienced home that can commit to supporting his special needs*
We are looking for an experienced home that can give Alex the life he needs and deserves. If you are interested in adopting Alex, please fill out an application!
