Meet Starfire

Add to favourites

Starfire was recently surrendered to the BC SPCA as a result of an Animal Protection Investigation, along with her buddies Taz and Billy (Billy is awaiting eye surgery, but will be available for adoption soon). They have all undergone veterinary assessments, deworming, vaccinations, hoof care, and dental work to help set them up for success in their new homes.

Starfire is a striking little mare who came from a difficult situation, she was not halter broke at intake and was sensitive to pressure, requiring sedation for exams and farrier work. Despite her rough start, she is bright and healthy overall, and progressing every day.

She was diagnosed with laminitis in all four feet, confirmed via radiographs, with mild rotation in the front and moderate rotation in the hind feet. She also shows signs consistent with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS), including a cresty neck and a high body condition score (7/9). She walked quite gingerly, but responded well to a therapeutic trim and has been sound since.

Starfire needs an experienced and patient adopter comfortable with equines requiring ongoing metabolic and behavioral management. Her EMS predisposition means she must have restricted access to grass and be fed low-sugar hay. With time, kindness, and consistency, she has great potential to become a rewarding companion.

Foster location: Salmon Arm, BC

Age: ~7 years

Adoption Fee: $150
