Meet Steele!

This handsome hunk is on the lookout for a new home! Steele came to us due to his ongoing struggles with reactivity directed towards strangers and dogs. Due to his reactive behaviour Steele wears a muzzle on walks to prevent him from making bad choices when frightened.

Steele finds meeting new dogs and strangers scary and needs slow introductions to help him feel safe around his new friends. When Steele sees dogs and strangers that have gotten too close he will bark and lunge to make them back up. His guardian will need to be physically strong enough to hold him back as he is a large dog. Steele has done wonderfully with positive reinforcement training as well as desensitizing and counter-conditioning to triggers. Steele does best when his new friends bring lots of treats and allow him to approach at his own pace. He benefits from a calm handler who can help him remain calm while making new friends. A guardian with experience attending positive reinforcement dog training classes would be a bonus.

Steele is incredibly sweet and affectionate once he gets to know you! He LOVES to wrestle and bat at you with his big paws but will quickly knock it off if asked. Steele loves to snuggle with his people and spends lots of his day playing with his toys – he loves stuffies! Steele walks well on leash (until he sees a trigger) and is extremely food motivated. He LOVES to learn and train.

Steele would benefit from a new home with yard access to allow him to get his energy out in the yard, leaving walks for training. Steele currently takes an anti-anxiety medication that helps him feel less stressed in the shelter. This medication also makes him calm during training, allowing him to better learn positive associations. Steele may need to remain on this medication long-term, or at least until his training is complete.

Steele will need to be the only animal in the home and would do best in an adult only home. Steele is in good health and has no major medical concerns at this time.
